The PT goes into the elections crushed by its allies

In the 2024 municipal elections, the PT will have to register the smallest number of candidates in the capitals in 32 years to give way to its allies.

Second The globePresident Lula’s party is working on the possibility of having its own candidates for mayor in 16 of the 26 states where the dispute will take place, supporting the names of other parties in the other capitals.

The change in strategy comes after the disappointing result of the last elections, when the party did not win in any of the 21 capitals in which it competed. The PT leaders considered the performance to be the best “the bottom” and they prefer to concentrate their efforts where there is a real possibility of victory.

Among the capitals in which the Workers’ Party will give up appearing as the frontrunner are Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Salvador, three of the largest constituencies in the country. This will be the first time that the PT will not have its own name in the race for mayor of São Paulo since its foundation in the 1980s.

Even in the Northeast, a region where the PT usually has a strong support base, there will be a reduction. The party will not run for mayor of Salvador, where it will have to support the candidacy of Geraldo Junior (MDB), São Luís and Recife. However, the acronym must launch candidates in Maceió and Natal. In João Pessoa and Fortaleza the party is still debating whether to participate in the elections with its own name or not.

Even in the 16 cities where the PT intends to have a candidate there are possibilities of composition with other parties. In Curitiba, for example, the PSB pressures PT members to renounce their candidacy to support MP Luciano Ducci (PSB-PR).

The relationship with the allied base

Despite this concern to form a ticket with allies, in some capitals the PT is expected to be an opponent of the parties that are part of the base of the government, as in Belo Horizonte. In the capital of Minas Gerais, the deputy Rogério Correia announced his pre-candidacy against the current mayor Fuad Noman (PSD).

Lula’s party also has not made an agreement to support União Brasil, which commands three ministries, in any capital.

If confirmed, the number of 16 candidates in the capitals will be close to that recorded in 2012, when 17 PT deputies ran for mayor. On that occasion, the PT chose to support candidates from allied parties, such as Eduardo Paes (then in the MDB), in Rio de Janeiro, and Gustavo Fruet (PDT-PR), in Curitiba.

The highest number of applications was recorded in 2004, with 23.
