In the last two days, the price of onion has increased by Tk 20 per kg. Now in Dhaka market per kg is being sold at Tk 120, which was Tk 100. And it has increased by 40 rupees in the last one week. In the previous week it was between Rs 80 per kg.
Wholesale and retail traders say that the season of chopped onion is over. Most of the farmers in the area have removed those onions. And now there are few days left for the full onion season to begin. In the meantime, there is a supply shortage. Due to which the price is increasing in the market.
Meanwhile, import of onions from India, the largest import market, has stopped. As there is no import, the demand is being met with this early variety onion for several months. As a result, the supply of domestic onion is almost at its end.
If compared to this time of other years, now the price of onion should be between 30 and 35 taka. But that image is no more. Buyers are fed up with buying onion at such a high price. Ushma said that most of them have increased the price of onions.

Gafur Mandal, a wholesale onion trader in Karwan Bazar, said that last Wednesday night, onion price was Tk 78 to Tk 82 per kg in the wholesale market. On Thursday morning, the price increased by Tk 15 to Tk 93 to Tk 97 per kg.
Mainly due to the increase in prices in the wholesale market, this has affected the retail market. In some neighborhood shops, onions were sold at Tk 130 per kg.
Meanwhile, wholesale traders said that although India’s exports have stopped completely, some onions have been imported from China and Pakistan in the last two months. Which is absolutely negligible compared to the demand. As a result, it has no effect on the market.
Abdul Majed, General Secretary of Shyambazar Onion Traders Association, said that due to the increased price of the dollar, the price of onions fell by Tk 70 to Tk 75 per kg when imported from other countries. If you calculate other costs and profit with this, the cost will be close to 100 rupees. So importers have to face huge losses. Because of this, traders do not want to import.

He said, it may take another one to one and a half months for onions to grow. That is why the government should take the initiative to bring onions from India. Because it is a neighboring country, it is possible to import onion from India in two to three days.
Meanwhile, on Friday, it was seen that the prices of vegetables, which have been high for a long time, have decreased slightly. In particular, the prices of winter vegetables like beans, radish, turnip, cauliflower and tomato were seen to be reduced by Tk 10 to Tk 20 per kg compared to the previous week. However, summer vegetables like bitter gourd and brinjal are being sold between Tk 80 and Tk 100 as before.
On the other hand, the price of farm chicken eggs did not decrease in the market. It is being sold at the price of Tk 140 to Tk 150 per dozen depending on the market. Which was 10-15 rupees less two weeks ago. Similarly, broiler chickens were sold at a slightly higher price of Tk 210 to Tk 220.
