Along with dates, dry fruits are also in demand in Kolkata. Dry fruits consist of several dry fruits including dates, cashew nuts, raisins, cherries. In the month of Ramadan, dates from home and abroad are available in the market of Kolkata. Some dates are available in packets while other types of dates are available in open form. But open dates are more in demand.
However, despite the demand, there is no special sales in this year’s Ramadan, said the date sellers of Kolkata.
Rajendra Sau, a wholesale date seller in Sealdah Satikkhana market, said that retail dates are 90 rupees per kg. And wholesale one palla (5 kg) is 400 rupees. The price is a little higher during Ramadan.
According to Monindra Kumar Yadav, another wholesale date seller, dates are being sold at a higher price of Rs 10 to 15 per kg during Ramzan than before. Monindra Kumar Yadav said that dates which used to be sold at Rs 70 to 80 per kg are now being sold at Rs 90 to 95.
Retailer Sahib Ghazi said that the price of dates has increased due to Ramzan. Earlier it was sold for 70 to 80 rupees. Those dates are selling for 100 to 120 rupees.
Bahari packet-wrapped dark brown dates are shipped from Arabia to the market in Calcutta. These dates are being sold in different markets of West Bengal from Kolkata. These dates are being sold for Rs 250 to Rs 350 per packet and somewhere around Rs 400.
Apart from this, the price of cashew nuts is also high. Good cashew nut Rs.800 per kg. Somewhere it is selling for 700 rupees and somewhere else it is selling for 650 rupees. Apart from this, raisins are being sold for 250 to 300 rupees.
Meanwhile, since the beginning of Ramadan, the price of dates has been on fire in Bangladesh. Every year, the price of dates increases slightly during Ramadan. However, this year’s price increase has surpassed all previous records. Dates of different varieties of normal quality are also beyond the reach of common people. In the market, dates have become a luxury product for people who are tight on the price of other daily products.
This year, five kilos of Miriam dates are being sold at wholesale starting from 4,300 to 5,500 taka, which was 2,500 to 4,000 taka last year. Kalmi dates are being sold at Tk 4,200, which was Tk 2,500 last year. Five kg of Ajwa dates are being sold at Tk 3,500 to Tk 4,200, which was Tk 26,000 to a maximum of Tk 32,000 last year. This year Mabrum dates are being sold at 3500 to 4500 taka, which last year was from 2200 to 3200 taka. Medjul, which was sold at 5,500 to 6,000 taka last year, is now being sold at 7,500 to 8,000 taka. Compared to last year, the price of dates per kg has increased from Tk 200 to Tk 600.
