Voting for the presidential elections and the referendum on the introduction of dual citizenship has started in Lithuania.

As TASS reports, 2,889 million residents of the country and 2,385 citizens of the republic abroad have the right to vote.

The presidential elections to be held on May 12 are the eighth since Lithuania’s independence. For this purpose, about 1900 polling stations were opened in the country. At the same time, a referendum is being held on the introduction of dual citizenship.

8 candidates are running for the position of head of state. Four of them were nominated by political parties, four were self-nominated. According to experts and polls, the favorites are incumbent President Gitanas Nauseda, 59, who is running for a second term, Prime Minister Ingrida Simonite, 49, and independent candidate, lawyer Ignas Vegele, 48.

In order to win, the candidate must get more than 50 percent of the votes. If none of the candidates manage to register that result on May 12, then two weeks later a second round will be held with the participation of the two leaders of the previous one.
