Addis Ababa – Yesterday, Saturday, Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Sheikh Ghazouani assumed his duties as rotating president of the African Union for the year 2024, succeeding the outgoing rotating president, President of the Comoros, Ghazali Assoumani.
This came during the opening of the 37th African Summit in Addis Ababa, yesterday, Saturday.
The Mauritanian president was elected as rotating president of the union unanimously in the North African region.
It is noteworthy that the presidency of the African Union rotates between the five regions of the union, with the Comoros holding the presidency of the union for the year 2023 from the East region.
The North Africa region includes: Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Tunisia, and Western Sahara.
A few days ago, Al-Ghazouani sent messages to the leaders of Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, Libya, Sudan, and Egypt, which were delivered by Foreign Minister Mohamed Salem Ould Marzouk to the leaders of these countries, related to coordination for the African Union summit.
