On Poder360, the president of Progressistas states that, if it depended on the majority of members, the party would not be on the Esplanada
The national president of the PP (Progressives) and leader of the Minority in the Senate, Ciro Nogueira (PI), said on Wednesday (24 January 2024) that the party is not independent, it is in opposition to the government of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva ( PT). The congressman said in an interview with Poder36o that if it depended on the majority of members, the party would not be on the Esplanada.
“The party is not independent, the PP is in opposition because the majority of the party wants it. I was against joining the government. If we listened to the majority of councilors, mayors, state deputies, federal deputies, we wouldn’t be in this government. We have an opposition profile. We are a centre-right, centre-right, conservative party.” he has declared.
Watch (2 minutes and 33 seconds):
Currently, the party occupies the Ministry of Sports in the Esplanada de Lula, with MP André Fufuca (PP-MA) as minister.
The PP was also responsible for the nomination of the current president of the Caixa Econômica Federal, Carlos Vieira, in an articulation that involved the president of the Chamber of Deputies, Arthur Lira (PP-AL).
In the Chamber the deputies claim to be independent. Despite this, Ciro declared that he was solely responsible for the party. “I am the president of the party. I have just been re-elected and I am the one who speaks for the party.”these.
Regarding the PT administration’s appointments involving the PP, the party president said this “It was an individual decision of the people who took on these roles”.
“If you look, the votes haven’t changed at all. If you look, it is a group of deputies, especially from the Northeast, who vote in favor of the government. There is no material yet on which we can close the matter. These deputies will be forced to vote against the issue,” he has declared.

Ciro Nogueira once again stated that it was a political mistake for Lula to return for a third term. A former ally of the PT MP, the senator says that he will remain faithful to former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) as long as he is involved in politics. The PP president served as minister of Bolsonaro’s Civil Chamber from August 2021 to December 2022.
For the deputy, the government “I make a lot of mistakes”lives in “superpower complex that doesn’t exist” And “not taken seriously” not external.
“It is a government that makes many mistakes in all sectors. In economic policy. In foreign policy he embarrasses us with absurd declarations. Sometimes I think that President Lula wants to transform our country and for this reason outside Brazil he is seen as a great sucupira. People laugh at these statements. It is a country today that is not taken seriously”these.
Asked what has changed from Lula from the past to the present, Ciro Nogueira stated that the third mandate of the PT deputy will be to take a position for the “company”.
“The Lula of old won those elections magnificently, he won them after 4 elections. He was a man who came to fight hunger and poverty. Today Lula, people continue to suffer from hunger, their lives have not improved. He is a Lula who came only to look for places for his comrades, to equip state companies”, these.
And he added: “Just look back. It’s a fixation with President Bolsonaro. He has already been in government for 1 year. There were no jobs, no steaks, no better lives for people. He will have to answer.”
CONGRESS X GOVERNMENT REPORT
The Senate minority leader confirmed that Planalto’s relationship with Congress is adversarial and defended that the focus for this first semester should be less approval of fundraising agendas.
“Congress can no longer be condescending towards this situation of a government that only thinks about spending, increasing spending, which does not make the slightest effort to cut spending and improve management. Just think about raising money and then look at the taxpayers’ pockets.”he has declared.
SUPPORT FOR ENDING RE-ELECTION
Ciro Nogueira supports the flag of the president of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), to carry forward the agenda that ends re-election in Brazil. The proposal is discussed within the New Electoral Code and is expected to be implemented this year to come into force from 2030.
The senator defended the increase in term of office to 5 years and the unification of elections, with municipal and national elections being held in the same election.
“Brazil has no mechanisms to deal with the issue of re-election. The use of public cars. People get elected and do everything with re-election in mind.”he has declared.
ADMINISTRATIVE REFORM: “IT DEPENDS ON THE GOVERNMENT”
The MP said he was not optimistic about the progress of administrative reform in the short term. According to Ciro Nogueira, for an important reform such as the administrative one to move forward, the support of the Executive is necessary.
“I think a lot of it depends on the federal government. I think it is very difficult for reform to take place if the government does not support it. I hope. I don’t really believe it, I don’t deny it. Because I don’t think this government thinks about public management”these.
When asked about the stability of public employees, one of the main points of debate on the topic, the senator said he was in favor of stability for positions that carry the risk of persecution.
“A public official who does not provide a good service to the population does not need stability,” these.
MANDATE TO THE MINISTERS OF THE STF
Ciro Nogueira defended the proposal under discussion in the Senate which wants to set a number of years for the mandate of the ministers of the STF (Federal Supreme Court), but believes that the period should be at least 15 years.
“I am in favor of the mandate of STF ministers, as long as it is not too short. I don’t see how anyone can have a ministerial mandate of less than 15 years. We need to discuss something in 15 or 20 years. It is useless to compare it to the delegations of the Legislator”he has declared.
GOVERNOR OF THE RR IN THE VISA OF JUSTICE
The president of the PP defended the governor of the state, Antonio Denarium (Progressistas), after the TRE-RR (Regional Electoral Court of Roraima) decided on Monday (22 January), with 5 votes against 2, to revoke his mandate for the third time.
According to Ciro Nogueira, the Denarium case will be resolved in Brasilia at the TSE (Higher Electoral Court).
The deputy specifies that the situation of the TRE-RR is like this “very politicised”.
“It is a discussion that will take place in Brasilia. Because the TRE situation in that state is very politicized. He is a governor who has almost 90% approval. He is a man who is an example for that State. If you look at the law, I’m sure he will stay ”.he has declared.
