JAKARTA – Scientists reveal that the planet Uranus emits an exactly similar stench fart and rotten eggs. This discovery comes from the complaints of astronauts who returned from there.
Astronauts complained that the spacesuits they wore smelled bad, like burnt flesh or gunpowder. In a report from BGR, Thursday (1/18/2024), scientists then looked for this strange phenomenon.
Using an instrument called the Near-Infrared Integral Field Spectrometer (NIFS) installed at the Gemini North telescope in Hawaii, astronomers have finally found the answer. The bad smell that sticks to astronauts’ suits is due to the fact that the clouds found on Uranus are made up of hydrogen sulfide gas. This gas gives rotten eggs a distinctive, unpleasant odor.
But Uranus isn’t the only smelly place in space. Comets also have concentrations of hydrogen sulfide in their gaseous halo, along with ammonia and other molecules that emit unpleasant odors. Fortunately it also contains a high concentration of water vapor, so the odors are faint.
Some researchers also believe this Uranus it might smell like urine, as both Uranus and Neptune can have ammonia ice in their clouds, which would provide another disgusting smell along with the smell of rotten eggs. Uranus is truly a unique planet. But what is clear is that the place is truly rotten.
