The PGR denounces Roberto Jefferson for ties to January 8th

In a complaint sent to the STF, Paulo Gonet considers the former deputy a “relevant link” for the attacks on the Three Powers

The PGR (General Prosecutor’s Office) sent a complaint to the STF (Federal Supreme Court) on Thursday (18 January 2024) accusing former federal deputy Roberto Jefferson of having links with 8 de Janeiro. Here is the complete document (PDF – 101 kB).

At the rally, the Attorney General of the Republic, Paulo Gonet, considered Jefferson a “the relevant thing” for the extremist attacks on the headquarters of the Three Powers, in Brasilia. Gonet clarified that the former deputy used the party structure of the PTB (Brazilian Labor Party). “fragile” the institutions. He was president of the party from 2016 to 2021.

“The facts attributed to the accused Roberto Jefferson can be seen as a relevant link in this mechanism that led to the violent acts of January 8, 2023. This perspective is strengthened considering that they are attributed to the accused, in addition to having used part of the structure party financed by the Treasury to weaken the institutions of the Republic, having publicly formulated senseless verbal attacks against the central institutions of the Democratic Republic, in an effort that the vision of this moment allows us to place as a strategy aimed at fomenting a movement of reprehensible disintegration of the ‘political order’said Gonet.

Roberto Jefferson has been in prison since October 2022, after firing a firearm at federal police officers who were executing search and seizure warrants in his home, located in Comendador Levy Gasparian (RJ).

The former deputy has also been charged with the STF since June of the same year for incitement to crimes against national security, slander and homophobia. At the time, the Court had upheld the complaint filed by PGR in 2021.

The crimes indicated by the PGR against Roberto Jefferson concern statements made by the former deputy during 2021.

  • crimes against national security: incite the population to invade the Senate premises during the ICC (Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry) against Covid;
  • slander: state that the President of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), committed an offense by not proceeding with the request for impeachment against the ministers of the Supreme Court;
  • homophobia: claim that the LGBT population would represent “the moral demolition of the family”associating the group with drug addicts and dealers.
