MADRID (CulturaOcio).- The Hollywood Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the organization that delivers the Oscars, announced a new package of rules that will come into effect this year.
Some modifications that will not affect all the categories, but will affect some of the most notable of the ceremony, such as best film, where the requirements for exhibition in cinemas are reinforced, best script, best animated film or best soundtrack.
In a statement, the Academy announced its new bases. Among the changes, the elimination of drive-in cinemas stands out as part of the exhibition market to be taken into account in order to select a film for the best film category.
Drive-in theaters have been allowed since 2020, when traditional theaters remained closed during the pandemic. From now on, they will no longer be considered and any film that aspires to the statuette must pass through regular cinemas.
This measure joins those announced in 2023 to favor theatrical releases. They stated that, for a film to be selected, it must have a one-week theatrical release in one of the six cities considered major US markets.
Miami is replaced by Dallas/Metroplex, which joins Los Angeles County, New York City, the San Francisco Bay Area, Chicago and Atlanta.
In addition, a film seeking the grand prize must have a seven-day theatrical run, consecutive or not, in 10 of the top 50 US markets. Distributors will have up to 45 days to complete these releases.
In the case of films released at the end of the year, and whose release plan goes beyond January 10, 2025, distributors must send said detailed plans to the Academy for verification. These must include a theatrical release, at the latest, on January 24, 2025.
In turn, eligibility in the best picture category will continue to be subject to the submission of a confidential Registration for Academy Representation and Inclusion Standards (RAISE) form, of which at least two out of four must be met.
Finally, distributors and/or production teams must apply for PGA Certification no later than the date of the film’s first commercial screening.
CHANGES IN OTHER CATEGORIES
Aside from the changes in the best film category, the Academy has made modifications for the Oscars in the award for best screenplay, both original and adapted. Now, a final version of the shooting script will be required.
On the other hand, feature films submitted for the best international film award will also be eligible for the best animated film category if the eligibility requirements described for both awards are met. And the new eligibility period for best international film moves from November 1, 2023 to September 30, 2024.
In the best soundtrack category, the Academy implements a very important novelty. Now, up to three composers will be eligible to receive individual statuettes if, in exceptional circumstances, they have all contributed fully to the winning film’s score. Previously, if three composers performed together, they had to do so as a group.
This is what happened in the soundtracks of “Everything everywhere at the same time” and “Soul”, for example. Its composers only received one Oscar for everyone. The group definition has now been specified to include a recognized band. The new rules also indicate an increase in the shortlist, which goes from 15 to 20 titles.
Finally, the name of two special awards presented in the Scientific and Technical Awards is modified. The Gordon E. Sawyer Award will now be called the Scientific and Technical Achievement Award. And the John A. Bonner Award will be the Scientific and Technical Service Award.
It should be noted that all measures come into force this year in view of the 2025 Oscars, the 97th edition of the awards to be held on March 2, 2025.
