From this ancestral coconut tree, Tra Vinh people now have a wax coconut forest of nearly 1,300 hectares. Wax coconut is known as the most famous specialty of the province, sold at prices ranging from nearly 100,000 VND to over 200,000 VND per fruit depending on quality.
Wax coconut has a characteristic thick, mushy flesh like porridge, fragrant and fatty. Thanks to planting wax coconut, many farmers in Tra Vinh have become well-off. This precious coconut variety is now also being planted by farmers in many provinces in the West to develop the economy.
To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the wax coconut tree being planted in Vietnam and the Vu Lan Thang Hoi festival being recognized as a national intangible cultural heritage, Tra Vinh province will organize the 7-day 100th Anniversary of Wax Coconut Festival (August 25-31).
The festival will take place in Cau Ke town with a series of attractive activities such as fireworks, lion dance, folk games, Ong Bon worship, specialty fruit stalls including many wax coconut stalls, wax coconut food processing contest and culinary space, trade fair…
Wax coconut is the province’s typical fruit, Vu Lan Thang Hoi is a typical festival of the Chinese people in Tra Vinh. Tra Vinh province hopes that through the event, the value of wax coconut and Vu Lan Thang Hoi festival will be promoted to visitors from near and far, attracting tourists and investors to the locality.
