The global number of people with fortunes exceeding $30 million decreased by 5.4% in 2022, to 395,070 people, according to a report by the Altrata group of companies published this Wednesday. The index declined for the first time since 2018 and shows a record drop since 2015.
The number of billionaires fell in Asia (10.9%), Europe (7.1%), Australia and Oceania (4.6%), Africa (4.4%), and North America (4%), but increased in the Middle East (15.7%) and in Latin America and the Caribbean (17.5%).
A similar trend is detected with the combined wealth of billionaires, which on a global scale decreased by 5.5% to $45.43 trillion.
By region, the rate decreased in Asia (10.6%), Europe (7.1%), North America (4.3%), Australia and Oceania (4.2%), and Africa (3.9%). .
On the other hand, like the number of billionaires, the combined sum of their fortunes increased in the Middle East (13%) and in Latin America and the Caribbean (13.8%).
According to the report, the causes of the phenomenon include the conflict in Ukraine and geopolitical tensions, pandemic restrictions in China and high commodity prices. Furthermore, the document highlights that “a generational rise in inflation caused an aggressive tightening of monetary policy for the first time in more than a decade, prompting a greater reassessment of capital market risks and returns.” With RT
