The number of asylum applications exceeds that of 2022 with just a few days to go | Domestic

The number of asylum requests this year has risen to around 49,600. This means that more applications have already been registered before the end of the year than in 2022.

Last year, in 52 weeks, around 48,600 asylum seekers arrived in the Netherlands. This group consists not only of new applicants, but also of subsequent travellers. These are people who are allowed to come to the Netherlands to join a family member who has been granted asylum.

Since the beginning of the year, the number of asylum applications has remained almost unchanged compared to last year for a long time. Fewer asylum seekers arrived in the Netherlands in the summer than in the summer of 2022. This difference reversed in the autumn. October and November were quite busy months. The situation remained the same in December, while the inflow clearly decreased in December last year.

According to weekly data from the Ministry of Justice and Security, approximately twelve hundred people applied for asylum last week. In the same week last year, the Netherlands registered around six hundred asylum seekers.

For the twelfth consecutive week the influx is greater than the same week last year. In those twelve weeks there were more than fifteen thousand applications, compared to almost twelve thousand in the same period the year before. These are rounded figures, so actual numbers may differ slightly.
