Chairman candidate and district Jubo League leader Shahid Mahmud’s nomination papers have been canceled in Nilphamari Sadar Upazila elections. Returning Officer Additional Deputy Commissioner (Revenue) Biroda Rani Roy canceled the nomination papers on Sunday (May 5) afternoon due to loan default.
Shahid Mahmud is the current Chairman of Sadar Upazila Parishad and General Secretary of District Jubo League.
Five candidates submitted nomination papers for the post of chairman in this upazila. As the nomination of one of them was cancelled, four people remained in the contest. They are Sadar Upazila Awami League President former Upazila Parishad Chairman Md. Abuzar Rahman, former General Secretary of District Volunteer League and Vice Chairman of Upazila Parishad Deepak Chakraborty, President of District Works Party Tapan Kumar Roy and Zapa Neta (former President of National Youth Society). Tariqul Islam Besides, five candidates filed nominations for the post of vice chairman and four candidates for the post of women vice chairman.
In this regard, Shahid Mahmud told Jago News that I have taken a loan of Tk 15 crore from Rupali Bank Nilphamari branch in the name of Uttara Bij Himagar owned by me. Out of which I withdraw 11 crore rupees. Still four crore rupees are stored in the bank. I am not a defaulter by any means. I will appeal this.
Election Returning Officer Additional Deputy Commissioner (Revenue) Biroda Rani Roy Jago Newsak said, Rupali Bank Nilphamari branch Shahid Mahmud has been declared to be canceled due to providing information regarding loan default. He can appeal in this matter to the District Commissioner within the next 8 days.
In the third phase of the sixth upazila election, Nilphamari Sadar Upazila Parishad polls will be held on May 29. According to the schedule, May 2 was the last day for submission of nomination papers by the contending candidates. In this election, five people submitted nomination papers for the post of chairman, five people for the post of vice chairman and 14 people for the post of reserved vice chairman.
