The Most Real Signs of the Apocalypse Are Emerging in the Arctic Ocean

NEW MEXICO – Real signs of the Apocalypse appear around 3,000 meters or 9,843 feet below the Arctic Ocean that could submerge the Earth.

Scientists have discovered hydrothermal vents spewing hot fluids along the Knipovich Ridge near Svalbard, the northernmost settlement on Earth.

This new hydrothermal vent field was recently discovered on the seafloor in the triangle between Greenland, Norway, and Svalbard, right on the boundary of the North American and European tectonic plates.

Researchers from the University of Bremen’s Center for Marine Environmental Science (MARUM) used a remotely piloted submarine to collect samples and data from a hydrothermal vent field, which they named Jotul after a giant in Norse mythology.

Hydrothermal vents are usually found at the junctions of shifting tectonic plates, where geothermal activity is most intense.

They form when water penetrates the seafloor and is heated by magma from the planet’s interior. This superheated water then rises back to the seafloor through cracks and fissures, enriched with minerals and dissolved material from the oceanic crustal rocks.

Despite being a major tectonic plate junction, there were previously no known hydrothermal vents located on the Knipovich Ridge – until this discovery.

The discovery of the Jotul hydrothermal vents signals a new, unexplored ecosystem deep in the Arctic ocean.

Scientists hope to learn more about the unique biological communities that live around these vents, as well as their potential to contribute to the global carbon cycle.
