The most notable food price increases in February and March

The High Commission for Planning reported that the average indicative figure for prices for annual consumption recorded during the month of March 2024, an increase of 0.9 percent compared to the same month in the year 2023.

The delegation stated in its news note regarding the indicative figure for prices upon consumption that this increase resulted from an increase in the prices of food items by 0.9 percent and the prices of non-food items by 1.1 percent.

The same source highlighted that the change rates for non-food items ranged between a decrease of 1.2 percent for “health” and an increase of 3.3 percent for “restaurants and hotels.”

Compared to February 2024, the indicative figure for consumption prices increased by 0.7 percent. This increase resulted from an increase in the index figure for food items by 1.7 percent and the index figure for non-food items by 0.1 percent.

The increases in food items recorded between February and March 2024 included, in particular, the prices of “fish and seafood” (11.6 percent), “fruits” (3.1) percent, and “vegetables” (2.5) percent. “Meat” (1.7) percent, “Milk, cheese, and eggs” (1.4) percent, “Sugar, jam, honey, chocolate, and sweets” (0.3) percent, “Oils and spices,” and “Coffee, tea, and cocoa.” (0.1) percent.

Regarding non-food items, the increase in prices for “clothes and shoes” increased by 0.4 percent.

The indicative figure recorded the most significant increases in Al Hoceima (1.5 percent), in Laayoune (1.3 percent), in Tangier and Safi (1.2 percent), in Marrakesh and Dakhla (1.1 percent), and in Kenitra and Errachidia (1.0). In Agadir, Tetouan and Beni Mellal (0.9%), in Fez and Oujda (0.8%), in Rabat and Settat (0.7%), in Meknes (0.6%) and in Guelmim (0.4%). percent) and in Casablanca (0.3 percent).

Thus, the core inflation index, which excludes items with specific prices and items with high volatility, increased during the month of March 2024 by 0.3 percent compared to February 2024 and by 2.4 percent compared to March 2023.
