The most famous food pyramid? That of the Mediterranean diet. But is it still valid? Cook

1 / 4 : Food pyramid: how it works

The food pyramid is a model that allows us to quickly understand how our daily diet should be constructed. As a tool for effectively communicating which and how many foods should preferably be consumed throughout the week, and in what proportions, this model is not the only one in reality. Harvard years ago proposed a dish that is perhaps even more immediate in terms of understanding”, explains Filippo Ongaro, doctor, lifestyle coach and author of “Missione LongevitÔ. «It should be underlined, however, that the pyramid, like the Harvard plate, is not designed to give quantitative indications on calories and percentages of macronutrients (which can actually only be personalized and suggested by a doctor or a nutritional biologist) , but provides exclusively qualitative indications. The aim is to indicate which foods should be favored over others”. In the nutritional pyramid model, foods are stacked. The base is larger than the tip: foods that occupy this part will be favored. As you go up, however, the figure narrows: the foods we find here should be eaten in moderation. Finally, those placed at the top will be consumed in smaller quantities and less frequently because, according to experts, they are not suitable for keeping the body healthy for a long time. The pyramid representation helps to understand the proposed model, communicating in an intuitive way what is good to eat, how often, how and in what quantity.
