Images of the theft of expensive number plates on some cars in Baku and demanding money in return have been circulated on social networks.
Publika.az reports that the driver of the Volkswagen Passat car with the state registration number 99 EB 100 said that the person or persons who stole the license plate demanded money from him. He claimed that the rear registration plate of the car was stolen at night. In the morning, a piece of paper with a mobile phone number belonging to one of the Russian mobile operators was placed on the car.
The driver said that he contacted the mentioned number. He was told that he should send 600 manats to the account in one of the applications to find out the location of the number. After a little research, it turned out that this is not the first time such incidents have happened. There have been cases of theft or deliberate destruction of license plates.
Experts say that according to the law, it is impossible to restore a lost number. The driver can get a new one only if the number plate becomes unusable by submitting it to the Department of Public Transport. This puts car owners in a desperate situation.
Nurlan Aliyev, an employee of the Press Service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, said in response to our inquiry that the images spread on social networks are being investigated: “We are aware of the issue, relevant investigations are currently underway.”
