The new feature film from Czech television Smysl pro cancer won over fans after the first episode aired on Sunday. How could it not be, when the topic touches a large part of the population and tells a serious topic with a significant dose of humor and insight. On average, 1.27 million viewers over the age of fifteen watched the first episode. It was the best result of the whole Sunday.

The main character The meaning of the tumor Filip is played by Filip Březina: he is an ambitious neurosurgery student who has everything ahead of him. But instead of getting a prestigious position at the clinic, he becomes its patient. He will find out at the age of twenty-five cancer. Paradoxically, a serious illness becomes a matter that affects all members of his family: an opportunity to be a good mother, father, son, how to find a girlfriend and how not to lose her, how to tame the ego, not to think only about yourself same. And above all, think positively and hope for recovery.

The Belgian original Gevoel voor tumor, which won the Prix Europa 2018 award for the best TV series of the year, was seen for the first time by a representative of Czech Television in a show organized by the European Broadcasting Union. And since the way the Belgian authors managed to tell a serious story is truly unique, the series was chosen for the Czech adaptation.
New procedures in cancer treatment
“It goes beyond anything that has been filmed so far on this topic. Yes, there was also the possibility of dubbing the original or subtitling it in Czech, but the local actors, our environment and reality give the story authenticity necessary. And of course for a series of this kind the topicality of the therapeutic procedures depicted and the medical reality are important. Five years have passed since the premiere of the Belgian model, which is a long time in medicine. The series, which touches on topics that are more silent than told, and tells them with humor and empathy, was filmed by the director Tereza Kopačová (Methanol or How Not to Ruin Your Life series). “He knows how to infuse something into the stories that you don’t feel during preparation or on set, and it works great. He gets the most out of the actors and their characters in front of the camera. He can tell a fantastic and believable story about interpersonal relationships. When she does an emotionally intense scene, I make her cry every time, even though I know the script,” Stehlík emphasized.

Belgian Leander Verdievel first turned his personal experience with cancer into a book, then collaborated in writing the Gevoel voor tumor series. The author of the screenplay of the Czech version of Smysl pro tumor is Matěj Podzimek, who became friends with Verdievel while working on the series. They met in person, for example, at the Serial Killer festival, which included selected parts of the original and Czech versions in its program.
He almost didn’t get the lead role
Filming of all eight parts lasted a total of 81 days and, in addition to the Czech Republic, director Kopáčová’s crew also went abroad, specifically to Puglia. Filip Březina almost didn’t get his first major serial role because he showed up with a mustache at the Smysl pro-tumor casting. At the time, the director was not impressed by his image as a marriage swindler. He finally got the role of Filip Kalina and was willing to shave not only the beard under his nose, but also the hair on his head.
