A 27-year-old man from Bergen op Zoom was arrested because he approached an employee at the port of Rotterdam to remove cocaine from ship cargoes in the port of Vlissingen. For this reason, a 41-year-old man with no permanent address was also arrested in the port of Zeeland. The two allegedly seriously threatened the port employee. Perhaps they were looking for part of a shipment of almost 3,300 kilos of cocaine intercepted in Vlissingen.
The man from Bergen op Zoom was arrested on Tuesday. It happened at Rotterdam airport. The other suspect has been in custody since December 7 last year. During the investigation, several houses in Bergen op Zoom and Vlissingen were searched. Large sums of money and valuable goods were seized.
The case came to light after the port police received a report of a serious threat. He launched an investigation and the couple’s recruitment practices came to light. According to police, it was part of a shipment of cocaine seized last November.
After a tip-off, customs found 3,279 kilos of cocaine in a banana batch in the port of Vlissingen-Oost. The batch of cocaine, divided into six pallets, was destroyed on the same day.
Large amounts of money
The police speak of recruiters, because the suspects are engaged, among other things, in ‘recruiting’ port workers to help them, for example, in the importation of cocaine.
During recruitment, large sums of money are offered or port employees are severely threatened or coerced. Young people are often used for overtaking.
