Venezuelan authorities announced that they arrested 38 people linked to an alleged plot to execute explosive attacks and kidnapping officials and opposition leaders in order to generate shock before the legislative and governors elections.
The Minister of Internal Relations, Diosdado Cabello, indicated that “we have captured a group of Venezuelans who returned to the country with explosive artifacts” that, according to investigations, intended to detonate in embassies, police commands, hospitals, electrical and transport facilities.
He added that they also planned to kidnap “personalities of both the revolution (the government) and the Venezuelan opposition, especially those who are now in front as opposition candidates.”
Cabello indicated that the detainees – of which he said that 17 are foreigners – were seized electrical triggers and that many of them came from Colombia, so “we have given instructions (for) that all the flights that come from Colombia to Venezuela are immediately suspended.”
According to Cabello, among the detainees at the airport is an Albanian citizen who carried a Colombian passport and would have an international request for drug trafficking.
