The Windows and Android hybrid device that had long died out in my memory (the last one I can think of is the ASUS Transformer Book Trio TX201) reappears at CES 2024! On the ThinkBook Plus Gen 5, Lenovo relies on a split design to combine these two systems.

At first glance, the ThinkBook Plus Gen 5 looks like a regular convertible laptop. But when you remove the screen part, a 14-inch Android tablet will appear in your hands. The remaining chassis can still be used as a normal Windows PC with an external screen (of course the screen must be prepared separately). In this split state, the tablet can also be used as a wireless expansion display or graphics tablet for Windows. It’s worth mentioning that Lenovo has also carefully created a shared folder feature, and anything placed there will sync wirelessly between the two systems.

In addition to the special design, ThinkBook Plus Gen 5 also has good specifications. Its PC part is equipped with an Intel Core Ultra 7 processor, up to 32 GB memory and 1 TB SSD, equipped with a 75 Wh battery and supports WiFi 6E. The Android tablet uses a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chip, 12GB of RAM, a 38Wh battery and a 2.8K OLED screen. On the back there are dual 13MP and 5MP cameras and an FHD infrared camera on the front for authentication and login.

According to the impressions of our sister site Engadget after the experience, even though the machine on display is not a mass-produced machine, the device works quite well. After unplugging the tablet, you can immediately switch to the Android system and it will take 1 to 2 seconds to return to the Windows screen. Due to the poor network environment of CES, the graphics tablet function was not connected smoothly. It’s also a shame that the device only has two Thunderbolt 4 ports in addition to the 3.5mm headphone jack, and the keyboard key travel is also a bit short.

The Lenovo ThinkBook Plus Gen 5 starts at $1,999, which isn’t cheap, but after all, consumers are almost buying two devices. If you’re interested, it should be available in the second quarter of this year.
