The largest and most diverse dune complex in Bulgaria – “Kamchiski Sands” is once again a protected area, the Eco-Ministry announced on Friday.
The area came under the protection of the law in 2006, but the order to do so was declared null and void by a decision of the Supreme Administrative Court after it was appealed by a company that had acquired forests there with substitutes and intended to build. The court found that the document had no clearly defined boundaries.
Now, after years of pressure from non-governmental organizations, Ecominister Yulian Popov has issued the order for the protection of over 4.5 thousand decares of territory in the lands of the village of Novo Oryahovo and the village of Shkorpilovtsi, Dolni chiflik municipality, Varna region.
The declaration of “Kamchisky Sands” as a protected area aims to protect the complex, which includes all types of dune habitats, wet depressions and wet areas among the dunes, as well as their transition to floodplain longose forests and oak forests and habitats of plant and animal species.
Activities that could lead to the destruction of protected objects are prohibited in the protected area. Such are construction, with the exception of major repairs and reconstruction of existing technical infrastructure and facilities; change of purpose and manner of permanent use; activities leading to a change in the hydrological regime; search, exploration and mining of underground resources and mining of aggregates; placement of movable objects, with the exception of objects related to the management and protection of the protected area; movement of motor vehicles outside existing roads, as the ban does not apply in disasters, emergency situations and for conducting fire-fighting, emergency, control and rescue activities; carrying out fellings, except for forced and sanitary ones, and removal of invasive species and bushy vegetation; lighting a fire; hunting; waste pollution.
