For nearly 10 days, at the 6-hectare Bach Hop Thuy lake in the Astronomy Park (Ha Dong district, Hanoi), dead fish are floating white in one corner, day and night there is a foul smell.

Nearly 20 days ago, the Astronomy Park located in Duong Noi ward (Ha Dong district, Hanoi) with a total investment of about 260 billion VND was put into use after 4 years of abandonment.

This is the first outdoor park in Southeast Asia with an astronomy theme, attracting public opinion with its green space and beautiful architecture. The park was built with the theme of astronomy for research and entertainment purposes, with an area nearly equal to the Kazan Planetarium (Russia) – which is known as the world’s first astronomy park.

As noted by the reporter on the afternoon of February 26 and 27, dead fish floated white in a corner of Bach Hop Thuy lake.

Fish died in large numbers and smelled bad, seriously affecting people’s exercise and sightseeing.

The first time I went to the Astronomy Park with my friends, having to smell the stench of dead fish made Nguyen Chi Thanh (21 years old, from Hoai Duc, 3rd year student at FPT Polytechnic College) extremely uncomfortable. “This is the first and probably the last time coming here, the stench from the dead fish is too unpleasant,” Thanh shared.

According to Mr. Duong Van Hoang (guard at the Astronomy Park), the fish started dying about 10 days ago. “The cause of the fish’s death may be due to the sewage drain discharged directly into the lake,” Mr. Hoang said.

Mr. Hoang said that under Bach Hop Thuy lake there are many types of fish such as carp, hybrid catfish, and tilapia. These fish are partly released by people.

In addition to white fish such as carp and tilapia, many catfish weighing about 10kg also died. Most of these dead fish are in the process of decomposition.

“Many carp and catfish weighing 5-10kg died when I saw them in the corner of the lake, but I was sorry to see them but there was nothing I could do,” Mr. Hoang said.

Dead fish smell so bad that many people exercising at the Astronomy Park have to wear masks or cover their noses with shirts.

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Tam (26 years old, residing in Ha Dong district, white shirt) said he had been jogging in Astronomy Park for 3 days. But the stench from the dead fish made Mr. Tam very uncomfortable.

Walking around Bach Hop Thuy Lake is not difficult to see thousands of red carp floating on the water’s surface, breathing weakly.

On the side of the lake bordering Le Quang Dao street, there is a sewage drain flowing into the lake. According to the reporter’s observations, the lake water in this area is dark and has a strong stench.

Faced with the stinky smell of dead fish at the Astronomy Park, the leader of the People’s Committee of Duong Noi ward (Ha Dong district) said they would let the functional units check and handle the matter.
