Kink, the commercial alternative pop music radio station, will still be on the air. The station director, Jan Hoogesteijn, confirmed this to NOS.

In a week and a half, the station will take over Decibel’s regional air frequencies. This means that Kink can only be received on air in the Randstad. From then on Decibel can only be listened to online. The channel featuring pop music from the 1990s will also no longer broadcast on the DAB+ digital airwaves.

For Kink, frequency fulfills a long wish. The station has attempted several times to obtain a terrestrial frequency, but has always found itself in difficulty. Last year Kink forced the court to order that a new auction of FM frequencies could no longer be postponed by the Ministry of Economy and Climate. But at the July auction it turned out that Kink did not have sufficient financial means to purchase a frequency.

No hit parade

Kink’s history dates back to October 1, 1995, when it was founded as Kink FM. With HitRadio Veronica and Veronica NieuwsRadio was the third radio station with which the Veronica broadcasting association, which had left the public system a month earlier, wanted to bid for a terrestrial frequency for commercial radio.

“It is the first rock-oriented pop station in the Netherlands, where charts do not serve as a starting point,” the station introduced itself. Famous DJs such as Rob Stenders, Alfred Lagarde, Kees Baars and Rob Bisschop had to ensure that listeners found the station quickly. Kink FM with 13,000 people did not go beyond a cable listening density of 0.1%.

After two years, the station had to continue to operate almost exclusively with volunteers, in the hope of obtaining an FM frequency in 1998. This failed, just as with a new auction in 2002. Things got even worse in the volunteer channel when the DJ and Prominent figure Arjen Grolleman died suddenly in 2010 and the Veronica Association finally turned off the money tap a year later. On October 1, 2011, Kink FM stopped broadcasting after exactly sixteen years.

Four years later, director Jan Hoogesteijn managed to remove the Veronica brand name. The channel was picked up via digital airwaves and the Internet as Kink for short. Michiel Veenstra joined from 3FM as DJ and program leader. Eric Corton was also hired as DJ.

Kink recently returned to court over the FM auction. The channel believes that this did not happen according to the rules.
