The James Webb Space Telescope successfully discovers the oldest black hole 13 billion years from Earth

URBANBOGOR.COM – The James Webb Space Telescope has discovered the oldest black hole ever seen, a monster with a mass equivalent to 1.6 million suns and 13 billion light years away from Earth, hidden in the darkness of the universe.

The James Webb Space Telescope, whose camera allows humans to see past space, managed to photograph the supermassive black hole at the center of the GN-z11 galaxy and is estimated to have appeared 440 million years ago when the universe it was just forming.

Distortion of space and time is not the only thing that happens and this is an example of a black hole that formed due to its own gravity until it grew horribly in size during the first 50 million or 1 billion years since the Big Bang.

It is still unclear how this black hole could grow so fast even though the universe was just forming.

Searching for the right answer could explain how these supermassive black holes grew to such astonishing sizes.

The researchers published their findings in early 2023 in the arXiv database, but they have not yet been peer-reviewed.

“The black holes that appeared in the early universe could not grow as quietly as they do today.”

“They must have experienced a strange birth and growth,” said Roberto Maiolino, a professor of astrophysics at the University of Cambridge.

Until now, astronomers believed that black holes formed from the collapse of giant stars under their own gravity.

When they devour galaxies, for example, friction occurs that causes matter to rotate around the black hole and produces emissions of light that can be detected by telescopes, this light is called Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN).

The most extreme AGN yet is a quasar, a supermassive black hole with a mass equivalent to billions of suns and capable of releasing bursts of light trillions of times brighter than any star.

Because light travels at a constant speed through empty space, the more light a telescope captures, the further scientists can observe our universe from the past.

To find this supermassive black hole, astronomers scanned the sky using two infrared cameras and an integrated spectrograph to process the captured light into frequencies that computers could interpret.

By deconstructing a flash of light from the past, they managed to capture an unnatural frequency spike from a camera shot.

This strange spike is a sign of the existence of a giant black hole due to the presence of luminous material surrounding it and emitting light throughout the universe.***
