The Chargé d’Affaires of the Permanent Mission of Syria to the United Nations, Dr. Al-Hakam Dandi, stressed that the Israeli occupation is igniting the region and pushing it towards an explosion that cannot be contained by continuing its brutal crimes against the Palestinian people and its repeated attacks on Syrian and Lebanese territories, pointing out that the adoption by the General Assembly by an overwhelming majority of a resolution calling for an immediate cessation of the occupation’s aggression on the Gaza Strip represents a sincere expression of the conscience of the world and humanity.
In a statement last night following the General Assembly’s adoption of the draft resolution by a majority of 153 countries, against the opposition of 9 countries and the Israeli occupation entity, and 23 countries abstaining from voting, Dandi explained that Syria voted in favor of the draft resolution because it represents a sincere expression of the conscience of the world and humanity, and calls for an immediate halt to the brutal aggression against the brotherly Palestinian people, with its reservations about some of the wording contained therein that could be understood as equating the Israeli occupier with the Palestinian people groaning under occupation, between the executioner and the victim.
Dendy said: The General Assembly resumes its tenth emergency special session to discuss the dangerous situation in the occupied Palestinian territories, in light of the paralysis facing the Security Council as a result of the United States preventing it from assuming its responsibility to maintain international peace and security, and its insistence on giving Israel the green light to continue its brutal aggression on Gaza. We also appreciate the courageous step taken by the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, in alerting the Security Council under Article 99 of the Charter that what is happening in the Gaza Strip is a matter that threatens international peace and security, despite the fierce campaigns it is being subjected to.
Dandy added: We are resuming this session for the second time in less than two months, to address the insistence of the United States and some Western countries on liquidating the Palestinian cause and killing Palestinian children in support of the Israeli entity, which is carrying out an unprecedented campaign of extermination, which has so far claimed the lives of more than 18,000 martyrs and more than 50,000 wounded, most of whom are children and women, in a barbaric campaign in which the occupation has not even spared journalists and UN employees.
Dandhi pointed out that the occupation is continuing to destroy the infrastructure in the Gaza Strip, and continues its siege and prevention of the delivery of humanitarian aid, and the use of internationally prohibited weapons including incendiary phosphorous bombs, and the threat of using the atomic bomb, and following a policy of mass destruction, thus committing various types of war crimes, crimes against humanity, ethnic cleansing and genocide, disregarding all international laws and humanitarian principles.
Dandhi stressed the need for everyone to realize that what is happening today in the occupied Palestinian territories did not begin on October 7, but rather decades ago as a result of Israel’s continued denial of the Palestinian people’s right to establish their independent state with Jerusalem as its capital, and the accompanying continuation of the occupation and the persistence of aggressive practices since 1948.
Dandy pointed out that the Israeli occupation is today igniting the region and pushing it towards an explosion that cannot be contained through its ongoing brutal crimes in Palestine, which coincide with its aggressive practices in the occupied Syrian Golan, its repeated attacks on Syrian territory, and its targeting of civilian airports and infrastructure there, in addition to its attacks on Lebanon in flagrant violation of international law and the provisions of the Charter, which proves once again that (Israel) is nothing but a tool for spreading chaos in the region and spreading terrorism in it, and it is the main reason for threatening regional and international peace and security, all under the cover of the United States and its allies, who have recently resorted to mobilizing their fleets on the eastern shores of the Mediterranean, and providing unparalleled material and military support to their tool, the Israeli entity.
Dendy stressed that the United States’ use of the veto again in the Security Council, its opposition to the will of the vast majority of the Council’s members, and its rejection of a draft resolution whose only goal was a humanitarian ceasefire, constitutes a shameful insult to humanitarian standards and exposes the lie of concern for the lives of civilians, and proves that Washington and other Western countries are waging war in the Gaza Strip alongside the Israeli occupation, with the sole goal of annihilating the Palestinian people and establishing what is called “Greater Israel” on the remains of Palestinian children and women after destroying their homes and cultural heritage. Instead of allowing the Security Council to assume its responsibilities after more than two months of massacres and genocide, the veto came to grant war criminals a new license to continue committing massacres, destruction, and displacement.
Dundee explained that it is ironic that a country that brags about slogans of democracy and protection of human rights, and which is supposed to contribute to maintaining international peace and security, is preventing the Security Council from assuming its responsibilities in stopping the Israeli aggression, which exposes the biased approach in its policies when it comes to protecting (Israel) and ensuring its impunity for its violations of international law and the provisions of the United Nations Charter.
Dundee pointed out that the Security Council’s failure several times to stop the aggression encouraged Israel to continue its systematic crimes under the pretext of its alleged right to self-defense, at a time when some Western countries are crying over the values of humanity in other parts of the world, in a blatant example of international hypocrisy and duplicity in dealing with the values of truth and justice in accordance with the interests of the major Western countries.
Dandy expressed Syria’s regret and deep concern over the deteriorating situation in the Gaza Strip, and its condemnation in the strongest terms of the ongoing barbaric Israeli aggression against the brotherly Palestinian people, and the repeated attacks of the occupation on Syrian territory, and on our people in the occupied Syrian Golan, and its condemnation also of the cover-up by some Western countries of the violations committed by (Israel) in Palestine, Lebanon and Syria.
Dandy reiterated Syria’s support for the brotherly Palestinian people in their struggle to liberate their occupied land and establish their independent, sovereign state with Jerusalem as its capital. He stressed the need for an immediate halt to the Israeli aggression, providing urgent humanitarian support to the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip, preventing forced displacement, and ensuring that the Israeli occupation and its supporters are held accountable for these crimes, and that they do not escape punishment.
