According to international organizations on climate change, Pakistan is disproportionately affected by the effects of climate change, extreme heat waves, unpredictable rains, melting snow, increased floods and water scarcity, as opposed to contributing only 0.88% of global greenhouse gas emissions.
According to the Climate Change Performance Index website, Pakistan submitted a revised Nationally Determined Contribution in 2021. National targets include increasing renewable energy to 60 percent of the energy mix by 2030, which will require US$100 billion by this year.
Addressing the Climate Summit 2025, the Pakistani Prime Minister said that ‘loans on loans are not the solution to the problem, the international community should fulfill the promises of financial support for environmental protection.’
The prime minister announced that by 2035, the share of renewable energy and hydropower in Pakistan’s energy mix should be increased to 62%, nuclear energy capacity should be increased by 1200 MW by 2030, 30% of transportation should be transitioned to clean energy by 2030, water conservation would be ensured in addition to establishing 3000 charging stations in the country and the plan to plant one billion trees would be pushed forward.
In 2012, Pakistan took a major decision on its national climate change policy. The framework includes adaptation measures for sectors such as water, agriculture and biodiversity. CCPI experts see this policy as a strong point.
The Prime Minister said that he is addressing here at a time when Pakistan is facing a situation of heavy monsoon rains, cloud bursts and catastrophic floods.
More than 5 million Pakistanis and 4,100 villages have been affected by this climatic disaster, while more than 1,000 people have lost their lives.
He said that even in 2022, Pakistan had lost more than 30 billion dollars due to floods and millions of people were displaced.
