In 2021, the Pan American Health Organization launched a special program to monitor the side effects of COVID-19 vaccination in Argentina. The Lagomaggiore Hospital, along with four other hospitals in Buenos Aires, Neuquén, and Misiones, participated in a registry to evaluate the vaccination status of hospitalized individuals, including the type of vaccine, dose, and date of inoculation.
Dr. Silvia Atorri explained, “We recorded a range of common and generally mild events associated with most vaccines, such as pain at the injection site, redness, mild fever, and muscle or joint pain. We also monitored more severe effects, including cardiovascular, pulmonary, respiratory, severe allergies, and gastrointestinal phenomena. Fortunately, none of the approximately 250 patients from our hospital experienced serious complications.”
The results were sent to a committee at the Pan American Health Organization for further analysis of their potential relationship with the vaccine. Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, Dr. Atorri emphasized the importance of this research and the hospital’s commitment to contributing to the scientific and general community.

Following the recognition received by the Lagomaggiore Hospital, the surveillance work will continue. Dr. Atorri stated, “We have been asked to continue monitoring to further enhance our understanding of the vaccines that provide us with peace of mind against COVID-19. Without these vaccines, we would not have achieved a sense of security regarding the complications of the virus. Our work continues to ensure the development of more effective vaccines.”
