The most viewed musical theater work of the last decade returns 10 years after its premiere to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the civil and military coup at Teatro Mori. One of the most watched shows of the last decade, directed by the prominent Ibarra Roa brothers, will be presented from November 17, within the 8th Cycle of Memory and Heritage, and will run until December 16 of this year.
Santiago. 29/11/2023. 50 years after the civil and military coup d’état in Chile, 50 artists on stage open a space to repair the memory of a fractured country. “Víctor sin Víctor Jara”, a production that began the Chilean Musical Trilogy, is narrated and sung by a popular choir that reviews the life and work of the national author through his main compositions, being at the same time a tribute that is born from the Group of Relatives of Political Executed Persons (AFEP) to the thousands of citizens who, like Víctor, were victims of the dictatorship for singing out loud and trying to jointly create a future of justice and equality for the Chilean people.
The work, premiered in 2013 at GAM (40 years after the civil-military coup at that time), is written in tenths and covers the songs of Víctor Jara and the figure of the artist along with the thousands of victims of the dictatorship. Today, 50 years after their death, the Ibarra Roa brothers stage this staging in an essential multidisciplinary spectacle of memory for our country, in which singing, dance, music and theater come together, which 10 years after its premiere, is has become an unmissable classic on the national stage and from November 17 to December 16 it returns to Teatro Mori Recoleta in a popular cantata format, together with the figure of the acclaimed Chilean musician, singer-songwriter and theater director where Their musical art and protest song becomes more latent than ever.
The project is based on an investigation and reconstruction of the artist’s legacy where, “we seek to vindicate the figure of Víctor Jara in pursuit of the rescue of national memory and heritage, since, 50 years after the civil and military coup, it is urgent to generate an instance of reflection through art regarding the violation of human rights in Chile,” say its directors.
The participation of entities linked to human rights such as the AFEP and the Víctor Jara Foundation, make this project a coherent idea in itself, since it will generate instances of debate rich in both artistic and political-social feedback.
This revival represents a very significant moment in the history of the work “Víctor sin Víctor Jara”, since its 10 years of existence are celebrated, and in turn it will be an event full of emotions since posthumous tribute will be paid to four of its performers who were part of the original cast and who today are resting with Víctor Jara: Alejandro Sieveking , Tomás Vidiella, Claudio Ibarra and Grimaneza Jiménez. Also highlighted is the figure of Víctor’s recently deceased widow, Joan Jara, who gave the rights to the directors and named the play.
This 2023, part of the original cast will mix with performers from the new generations and will have 50 actors/singers on stage who will give life to this production that will be made up of professional actors and also by the project of the Ibarra Roa Brothers of the “Choirs.” Ciudadanos” that mixes singing and dance, making this work the beginning of a successful musical trilogy dedicated to the great popular musicians of Chile. First was “Víctor sin Víctor Jara”, then followed “La Carta” (2018), a work that emerged as a tribute to the figure of Violeta Parra and her art of social struggle 100 years after her birth and who was the winner of the award for Best Musical ¡Clap!, to finish the trilogy with the work “Pateando Piedras”, a musical inspired by the figure of Jorge González and recognized as the Best Musical of the year by the 2019 Carmen Awards and 2019 All Culture Awards.
It should be noted that the success of “Víctor sin Víctor Jara” the year it was released was immediate. In its first season it was seen by more than a thousand people and, shortly after, after successive presentations, it became the most viewed work of 2014 with 45 thousand spectators throughout the country and to date it can be said that it is the work of most watched musical theater of the last decade.
This is how the work that vindicated Chilean musicals in a staging that revived the theater of mass choirs in Chile and citizen dance, returns from November 17 to December 16 at the Mori Recoleta theater. By far, one of the most viewed works in the last decade, the cantata of “Víctor sin Víctor Jara” celebrates 10 years as a pioneer in generating new audiences.
