He had a flair for hard fights. But the last attempt at a collision ended horribly for the Danish hockey player Christian Wejse (25). He broke off a piece of his nose with his own plexiglass!
The Bremerhaven striker wanted to shoot down an opponent behind the goal during the German league match with Nuremberg. But he didn’t hit it perfectly and aimed his head at the bar. In addition, the harsh impact deflected his helmet at such a speed that the protective visor dug into his helmet and part of it was cut off!
“I thought I only had a broken nose,” Wejse described the first painful moments. 25 stitches The Dane immediately went to the infirmary and the cleaning crew got on the ice to clean up the large bloodstain. When the referee saw a piece of the nose in it!
“The judge handed it to the doctor and he brought it to my cabin. I never understood that I could cut off my nose!’ the surprised and frightened hockey player shook his head. Wejse therefore headed to the hospital, where the organ was sewn up again with twenty-five stitches!
“Fortunately, I can breathe and I didn’t get a sniffle. I just don’t know if I’ll still have feeling in the tip of my nose.” says the Danish representative, who has not lost any of his hockey skills. After a short recovery, he decided the match with Düsseldorf (5:4) with two goals! Only instead of plexiglass, he will probably wear a grid on his helmet forever. “My girlfriend is worried about me and has ordered me to protect myself more,” Wejse scowls.
