The historical executive of PASOK, Michalis Charalambidis, has died

The historical executive of PASOK, Michalis Charalambidis, passed away at the age of 73.

The known as “Italian”, a member of the PAK during the junta and the man who co-authored with others the founding declaration of PASOK presented on September 3, 1974 by Andreas Papandreou, breathed his last, alone, at his home in Glyfada .

Michalis Charalambidis was born in Alexandroupolis in 1951. He studied Political and Economic Sciences with a master’s degree in Sociology.

Persecuted during the dictatorship, he fled to Italy while he was a member of the PAK. After the fall of the dictatorship, he participated in the seven-member group that wrote the founding declaration of PASOK in Munich in August 1974, while he was a member of the Central Committee of PASOK from 1977.

Due to serious political disagreements, he left PASOK in 1999 and founded the party formation “Democratic Regional Union”, with which he participated in the parliamentary elections of 2000 (32,068 votes, 0.47%).

In 1988 in his presentation to the Second World Pontic Congress he had proposed to create a city on the coast of Thrace with the name Romania and to add to the name Thrace and the name Romania, so that the region would be called Thrace – Romania. In 1997, 204 MPs submitted a proposal to parliament for its creation, but without result. In 1994, the Parliament adopted his proposal to recognize May 19 as Pontic Genocide Remembrance Day.

He was a member of the Executive Committee of the International Union for the Rights and Liberation of Peoples and a member of the international non-governmental organization for human rights as well as a researcher at the Foundation for Mediterranean Studies.

In 1999 he founded the Democratic Regional Union party He took part in the parliamentary elections of 2000, achieving a percentage of 0.47%, with 32,068 votes and in the European elections of 2004, achieving a percentage of 0.73%, with 44,541 votes

In 2010, a videotaped excerpt from his speech in 1996 at the 6th conference of PASOK, where he referred to the possibility of an economic crisis in the country at the end of the then historical cycle that he himself placed “in 2004 or 2010”, received a lot of publicity on the Internet.

“Mihalis Charalambidis, the historical executive of PASOK and one of the editors of the Movement’s Founding Declaration, is no longer with us,” said Nikos Androulakis.

The president of PASOK emphasized about the deceased: “A profound democrat, patriot and ideologue, he charted a political path characterized by ethics and consistency. He took the lead and succeeded in 1994 in having May 19 recognized as a day of remembrance of the Pontic genocide by the Greek Parliament.”
