ANP Extra large sandbags are used to retain water at the Zuideinde in Volendam
NOS Nieuws•vandaag, 8.46pm
High water is still present in several places in North Holland, but the situation is currently stable. There was no new flooding today in the areas outside the dams near Hoorn and Volendam. Municipalities, security regions and water companies are prepared for the heavy rains that will fall in the coming days.
The water level in Hoorn has fallen slightly, reports a municipal spokesperson. Yesterday the water in Visserseiland and the De Grashaven marina was still flowing onto the quay and the garages were in danger of flooding. Sandbags were then placed to retain the water.
“Rijkswaterstaat expects another peak for next night. But it is estimated to be comparable to yesterday’s peak,” says the municipal spokesperson. “The sandbags that have been placed will therefore remain in place and we still have extra sandbags on hand.”
Also this evening and this evening an employee of the municipality of Hoorn will monitor the water level in Visserseiland and in the marina, the spokesperson said.
According to the Zaanstreek-Waterland security region, there was no large-scale deployment in Volendam today fire fighters necessary to place sandbags or pump water.
The Hoogheemraadschap Hollands Noorderkwartier speaks of “a calm image”. “We can now discharge better from the IJsselmeer into the Wadden Sea. And we expect that the water level in the Markermeer will now slowly decrease,” says a spokesperson.
Woudagemeal again
Furthermore, there does not appear to be any acute flooding elsewhere in the country at the moment. For example, along the IJssel, near Fortmond, the water level has dropped significantly. Fortmond was no longer accessible by road from Boxing Day; he was under water. Now the access road to the village has been reopened, reports RTV Oost.
Lemmer’s Woudagemaal had already been shut down on Friday, but will start working again on Tuesday, writes Omrop Fryslân. Friesland’s water office, Wetterskip Fryslân, says this is necessary because a lot of rainfall is expected in the coming days. At the same time, water cannot be discharged properly from the Lauwersmeer into the Wadden Sea.
“Don’t go out of the dam”
Heavy rain can cause problems in multiple locations where water levels are high. The KNMI predicts 15 to 25 millimeters of precipitation tomorrow. Tomorrow evening the code yellow will be in force in the north-western part of the country due to strong gusts of wind.
The situation is therefore carefully monitored by the various authorities. The Hollands Noorderkwartier Water Board is warning people to “be careful walking and other things” in areas outside dams over the next few days. “I’d rather not go.”
