The really good thing about Mr. Iwaaki is that he always let me freely maneuver around the things he wanted to do and just unleash my imagination to the fullest.

I started my career in animation, and if you were an animation student, you know that Parasyte, the original work, was like the Bible of mangas and animations. So I was a big fan too and when I read it growing up I was totally immersed in the universe. When you get fully into it you start thinking about your own universe, with your own imagination, about what it will be like, how it will happen, and what’s underneath what you see.

Parasyte: The Grays It came from that imagination of mine. In the original work the spores land in Japan, but what would happen if it landed in Korea? That’s how it started. “When I first wrote to Hitoshi Iwaaki, he told me that he really enjoyed trying to put together my film and that he thought it would be very intriguing to know my opinion on this original work,” explained the animator.

This new series from the streaming platform takes the public and science fiction lovers on an adventure where a group of parasites fallen from outer space begin to take humans as hosts, turning them into their slaves and creating a new species. that threatens their existence.

A woman unwittingly becomes a host of these alien parasites, but there is something about her that is different, so both she and the bug embark on a journey to save humanity. This is the story that Sang-ho developed and while her imagination gave her the perfect image of what she wanted, bringing it to live action was a challenge.

When I was writing the script, it was like a dream come true for me. So it started out being very interesting and fun for me and then I wanted to expand the message that the original work had. So it was actually quite a challenge, from writing the script to when we went into production. In the original work, which is the face you know, it opens and the creature emerges from the head.

That’s where the primary fear of body snatchers comes in, you know it and it’s that fear of thinking you know someone, but that person turns into someone totally different. I think it was like the perfect visualization of that primal fear that people have within themselves. So it was very important, important for me to visualize that and that the scene of the actor’s face transforming into tentacles was very difficult to capture on screen, it required a lot of challenging CGI work,” he concluded.
