The Canadian newspaper “The Global and Mail” reported today, Wednesday, that the former Libyan ambassador to Canada, Fathi Al-Baja, is still imprisoned in Benghazi, as he appealed to the authorities in Ottawa to reunite him with his wife and children residing in Ontario.
The Canadian newspaper said that Al-Baja was Libya’s envoy in Ottawa from 2013 to 2017 and was now trying to immigrate to Canada when the Internal Security Service arrested him in Benghazi in October.
The newspaper continued by saying that after more than four months, “Al-Baaja” is still not accused of any crime and is in deteriorating health, according to his relatives in Canada, who say that he is still imprisoned for political reasons because he criticized the government in Benghazi.
Months before his arrest, “Al-Baaja” revealed to The Global and Mail newspaper that he was protecting documents related to billions of dollars that the late Muammar Gaddafi had hidden in Canadian bank accounts and a penthouse in Toronto owned by his son, Al-Saadi Gaddafi.
Al-Baajah said he kept the stash of documents after leaving Ottawa because he was concerned that money and luxury possessions might fall into the hands of corrupt officials.
He was imprisoned on the orders of Khalifa Haftar, the commander of the armed forces in eastern Libya, and his son Saddam Haftar, according to a person familiar with the matter. The Global and Mail did not identify the source, who was not authorized to speak to the media about Al-Baja’s detention because his safety was at risk.
The Canadian newspaper confirmed that Al-Baja prison is being monitored by the United Nations and Global Affairs Canada and is considered a prominent example of the rampant civil and human rights violations that threaten plans to hold long-awaited elections in Libya.
The newspaper explained that at the same time, the Libyan embassy in Ottawa did not respond to requests for comment on the detention of the former Libyan envoy to Canada.
The newspaper indicated that Al-Baja Prison is being monitored by the United Nations Group of Experts on Libya, according to the confidential source
That person added that committee members were particularly concerned about his deteriorating health. The United Nations did not respond to a request for comment.
During his interview with The Global and Mail newspaper last year, Al-Baja expressed his desire for Libya to finally have a democratically elected government.
Al-Baja said that many members of the Libyan parliament, including their leaders, are sorry for my language, but they are thieves, according to him.
