Italian Carlotta Bertotti was born as a healthy baby, but after giving birth, her parents and doctors were frightened by a significant spot covering her entire face. From forehead to chin, the skin was blackened and rough. Even as a baby, Carlotta had to undergo many examinations, during which doctors determined whether the birthmark was dangerous. Finally, the girl was diagnosed with Ota’s nevus. It is a type of skin melanocytic lesion that is characterized by a blue or grayish color. This most often appears on the face, especially in the eye area, including the sclera, eyelids and surrounding skin. One person in a million is born with such a large facial mark.

Although the stain itself did not threaten Carlotta’s health in any way, her psyche suffered greatly. Children mocked her for her unusual appearance, and in primary and secondary school the girl experienced hell and was not even bullied. She already wore make-up at the age of 8 and spent almost two hours in the bathroom every day to at least disguise the birthmark. Although she did everything she could to fit in, she constantly felt like an outsider. Her parents and closest friends were a big support.
Carlotta is very beautiful and has always wanted a modeling career. She wanted to prove to everyone that even with such a large birthmark she could impress. In 2018, she therefore set up social networks, which she began to fill with photos from her travels and mainly wanted to share her story with others. She even published a book, Incancellabile, in which she reminds us that true beauty does not lie in perfection, but in accepting our flaws and celebrating our uniqueness. Today, the girl is one of the most sought-after models, and she views the mark, which once represented a huge burden, as her advantage.
