The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) is in favor of making Palestine a full member of the organization. A poll was held on Friday (May 10) in this regard. The resolution calling for a reconsideration of Palestine’s full membership in the Security Council was 143 votes in favour, 9 against and 25 abstentions. The American media reported on CNN.
The resolution of the General Assembly calls upon the Security Council to consider the matter positively. It emphasized on granting the Palestinian Authority UN membership. It is said that Palestine has qualified to become a member of the United Nations.
As a result of the passage of the resolution, Palestine did not become a full member of the United Nations. But it has recognized the country as eligible to become a member.
The General Assembly cannot grant full membership to any country. But the passage of Friday’s resolution would give Palestine some additional benefits and rights from September 2024. For example, the representative of the country can sit in the assembly hall with the member countries of the United Nations. But can’t vote.
Ahead of the vote, the U.S. mission to the United Nations signaled that the U.S. would again veto the Palestinian membership bid if it were sent to the Security Council. Earlier in April, the country vetoed the Security Council.
The US mission claims the Palestinian Authority has not met the qualifications for UN membership. The proposal did not address concerns about Palestinian membership.
Palestine reapplied to become a full member of the United Nations in April. That same month, the Security Council voted on the application. Twelve countries voted in favor of the 15-member Security Council. Only the United States vetoed it.
Israel praised the US veto. The country called the Palestinian appeal a shameful proposal.
Palestine failed to become a full member of the United Nations in 2011. But a year later the Palestinian Authority was granted non-member observer status by the United Nations.
After the vote, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said that Palestine will continue its efforts to become a full member of the United Nations.
Israel’s UN ambassador Gilad Erdan condemned the vote. He said, the UN is now welcoming terrorist states as its members.
