After the main suspect in the murder of nurse Íris Rocha, 30, was arrested this Thursday (18), the police revealed details about Cleilton Santana dos Santos’ relationship with the victim, who was pregnant. Police station chief Alfredo Chaves, deputy Maria da Glória Pessoti, stated that her ex-boyfriend controlled the nurse’s life, always waiting outside work and also had her cell phone, responding to her messages.
“He spent 24 hours a day monitoring the victim. He was in a very abusive relationship. He controlled her entire life, spending several hours a day away from his job at Ufes. His phone remained with him, responding to messages that received. It was controlled by him”, says the delegate.
The delegate also explained that Íris had suffered physical attacks. According to an inspection carried out by the Civil Police, he only wore clothes with long sleeves and, sometimes, appeared with a wounded face.
I heard from several people informally and they all said the same thing: that he controlled her and that she was in an abusive relationship.

The delegate also said Iris and Cleilton also got back in touch after the nurse asked for a protective measure after being assaulted by him in October. According to Maria da Glória, the rapprochement probably occurred due to her pregnancy: the victim was eight months pregnant when she was killed.
“The relationship was bad and they did everything to hide it. The family says she was not with him. But, from my investigation, she continued to have contact with him. So much so that on January 10th she got into her vehicle, “said the delegate, informing that the video surveillance cameras recorded the moment in which Íris got into Cleilton’s car, near the Ufes Maruípe campus, where she worked .
History of assault
On October 5, 2023, Íris filed a police report reporting that she had been assaulted by her then boyfriend, Cleilton, who was arrested this Thursday (18). They had been together for five months at the time and the nurse was 15 weeks pregnant. She reported that the two were talking when she received a “strangulation from behind” blow from him and passed out.
When she recovered, she said she had nosebleeds and was coughing. The same attacker allegedly gave the nurse a bath, and she then got to work. After telling a colleague about the incident, she Íris was encouraged to file a report with the police. At that point, she asked for a precautionary measure.
The crime
Íris was found dead by an off-duty police officer on a rural road in Alfredo Chaves, in the south of the state, on the 11th. The victim had two puncture wounds to the chest. The Military Police report said identification was difficult because it was covered in lime, a material used in civil construction. Five .40 caliber pistol casings were found at the scene.
Although it was found on January 11th, a Thursday, the family members discovered the case only four days later, on the 15th, a Monday, when they went to recognize the body at the Legal Medical Service (SML) in Cachoeiro de Itapemirim. also in the south of Espírito Santo.
