The French Minister of the Interior presents his resignation and Macron rejects it

Gérald Darmanin, French Minister of the Interior, presented his resignation to the country’s president, Emmanuel Macron, on Monday, after the National Assembly (lower house of Parliament) refused to debate the immigration bill prepared by the Elysée. For his part, the president did not accept his resignation.

Earlier the same day, the National Assembly rejected a bill that established stricter immigration rules, such as facilitating the expulsion of illegal immigrants, mandatory regularization of undocumented workers in sectors with labor shortages, an annual quota of arrivals of migrants and cancellation of all medical assistance for undocumented people, except for emergencies.

The rejection motion was presented by the leftist Nupes formation and supported by the National Rally (RN), of the right-wing Marine Le Pen, and the Republicans party (LR). With 270 votes in favor and 265 against, the French deputies rejected the Executive’s proposal.
