Gérald Darmanin, French Minister of the Interior, presented his resignation to the country’s president, Emmanuel Macron, on Monday, after the National Assembly (lower house of Parliament) refused to debate the immigration bill prepared by the Elysée. For his part, the president did not accept his resignation.
«I have presented my resignation. The President of the Republic rejected it. I am a man of honor […] The president had to decide. “He has decided,” Darmanin declared to the French channel TF1.
Earlier the same day, the National Assembly rejected a bill that established stricter immigration rules, such as facilitating the expulsion of illegal immigrants, mandatory regularization of undocumented workers in sectors with labor shortages, an annual quota of arrivals of migrants and cancellation of all medical assistance for undocumented people, except for emergencies.
The rejection motion was presented by the leftist Nupes formation and supported by the National Rally (RN), of the right-wing Marine Le Pen, and the Republicans party (LR). With 270 votes in favor and 265 against, the French deputies rejected the Executive’s proposal.
«The alliance of opposites […] who think absolutely differently, have come together to tear down the Government’s text for political reasons. […] It hurts me to see LR act as RN’s crutch. It is clear that the LR are playing the politics of the worst,” commented Darmanin, underlining that the approval of the final motion was a “failure.” «As long as I am minister, I will fulfill my duty to protect the French […]”If we do not take these measures, tragedies await us,” he added, ensuring that he will not withdraw the bill and that he will continue “his constitutional path.”
For their part, from the Elysée they told BFMTV that Macron had asked the Prime Minister, Élisabeth Borne, and the Minister of the Interior and Overseas, Philippe Viguier, to “present him with proposals to move forward, lifting this blockade to reach a effective legislative text. With RT
