A tailor-made start for Luxembourg’s footballers: The national team around the returning captain Laura Miller started the European Championship qualification with a victory. The FLF team won 2-1 against Albania, the favorites in Group C5, on Friday in Esch/Alzette. Charlotte Schmit and Amy Thompson scored the goals.
With the CR7 attitude, Ana Barbosa wants to go to the top
Miller, who was injured during the entire Nations League phase last fall and winter, made her comeback to the national team in front of 511 spectators at the Stade Emile Mayrisch. Experienced defender Emma Kremer had to miss the game due to an injury. Kylie Merlevede was in the starting line-up for the first time.
In a strong first half, the hosts created many top-class chances to score, but they were not rewarded for them. Marta Estevez (5′) had the first opportunity to take the lead, her long-range shot went wide of the goal. Joana Lourenco (10′, 15′, 32′), Leila Schmit (28′) and Merlevede (35′) also gave the local fans hope in vain.

Albania had their first chance five minutes before half-time when a direct free kick from captain Megi Doci went over Lucie Schlimé’s goal. And then things got bitter for Luxembourg: Lucie Gjini (43′) turned the game on its head with a winning goal for Albania.
Luxembourg turns the game around
After the break, the guests appeared dangerous in front of the Luxembourg goal more often. The FLF women fought back as best they could. Charlotte Schmit ultimately caused great cheers in the stands. The 18-year-old scored the deserved equalizer from the edge of the penalty area (68′). Shortly before the end, substitute Amy Thompson (87′) rewarded the Luxembourg fighters with the winning goal.
FLF women start their European Championship qualification with a home game
It was the start of the first European Championship qualification according to the new Nations League format. The next game of the campaign is the away game against Albania on June 4th. Two duels against Estonia follow in July.
