A thick winter coat was certainly not an unnecessary luxury on a Sunday morning. In many places the sky was still cloudy at first and in the far south-east some light rain was still falling. Then it became dry and the sun came out more and more often.

“The temperature in the far north is around or just below freezing. In the rest of the country the temperature is 1 or 2 degrees above zero. However, the strong north-east wind makes it feel much colder,” warns meteorologist Floris Lafeber of Weeronline.

Even on Sunday evening the sky will be dry everywhere and the sky will be wide and clear. At night it cools down considerably and minimum temperatures will possibly be between 0 and -5 degrees.

Moderate frost

The new week starts off decidedly cold. Large-scale light to moderate frosts are present. Some cloud fields will still be visible regionally on Monday, but after Monday the sun will shine exuberantly.

“In some places the temperature doesn’t go above freezing, so you can talk about an icy day,” explains Lafeber. “A mostly moderate north-east wind makes it feel much colder. The perceived temperature in some places can even reach -10 degrees, so dressing appropriately is a must.”

Sunny

The weather will also remain cold and sunny on Tuesday and Wednesday. From Thursday there will be a few more clouds and the temperature will appear to rise above freezing. “There are scenarios where the frost disappears, but there are also calculations that allow the frost to continue overnight.”

With a few days of light or moderate frost you can safely skate on a natural ice rink, Lafeber assures enthusiasts. “Natural ice will also form on flooded meadows, floodplains and ditches, but ice here can often be unreliable. This is because the water level will slowly drop, causing air to go under the ice instead of water. Since there is quite a bit of wind, ice growth on larger water surfaces will be difficult.”
