Jacob Forssmed, Minister of Social Affairs of Sweden, confirmed that the first case of infection with “mpox” virus (monkey pox) was registered in the country.
Publika.az reports that he held a joint press conference with the Public Health Agency to inform the population about the situation related to the spread of the infection.
According to Forssmed, the patient who applied to the Stockholm region for medical assistance was currently in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where the virus is widespread.
“This is the first case caused by a variant of the virus diagnosed outside the African continent,” said Olivia Wigzel, Acting Director General of the Public Health Agency, noting that the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) assesses the risk of the disease spreading as very low.
Wigzel added that there is no need for further infection control measures in Sweden and there is sufficient stock of monkeypox vaccine.
It should be noted that on Wednesday, the World Health Organization declared an international emergency due to the “mpox” virus spread in Africa.
