ASHGABAT – The popularly nicknamed fire crater Hell’s Gate’ in Turkmenistan, it is no longer as scary as it used to be when the fire started to go out and die down,

The Darvaza gas crater is located in the Karakum Desert and has been spewing ‘demon breath’ or flames non-stop for decades.

As reported by The Sun, Sunday (1/9/2024), however, the volcanic crater which is a tourist attraction surprised the public when it stopped burning and it is not expected to last long.

Local news channels reported that the Turkmen government has frequently raised the possibility of closing the kilns.

Tourists visiting Darvaza also reported that the 1,000 degree Celsius fire was getting smaller than before.

UK-based Turkmen tourism pioneer Dylan Lupin said: “I think the fire levels in Turkmenistan are about 40 per cent of what they were when I first saw them there in 2009.”

The Darzava fire crater, nicknamed the “Gates of Hell” in Turkmenistan, has been gaping and spewing fire for decades.

The difficulty in uncovering the mystery of the emergence of the “Gates of Hell” is natural, because Turkmenistan was once part of the Soviet Union which was known to keep big secrets.

The Darvaza fiery crater is located in the middle of the vast Karakum desert. Little is known about its appearance, which is the result of a failed Soviet oil and gas drilling operation in 1971.
