The electronic newspaper Hespress learned from parliamentary sources that the Public Finance Oversight Committee, headed by MP Mohamed Ahjira, approved in its office meeting, today, Monday, the request of the Socialist-Federal Opposition group to summon Leila Benali, Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, and Director General of the Moroccan Agency for Energy Efficiency to study. According to data obtained by Hespress, the meeting of the Office of the Public Finance Oversight Committee, the first of its kind in the second half of the legislative term, was devoted to studying the request to hold a committee meeting submitted by the Socialist-Federal Opposition team.
The Socialist Group’s request comes in implementation of the provisions of Article 295 of the House of Representatives’ internal regulations, where it requested the committee’s presidency to call for a meeting, in the presence of “the Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, and the Director General of the Moroccan Agency for Energy Efficiency.”
The socialist team called for dedicating the meeting to studying the issue of “financial governance of the agency’s management, and to study the institution’s achievements,” in addition to examining its “future work programs according to a methodology that enables the development of its performance and the governance of its management.”
The Socialist Group reported in its correspondence that the Supreme Council of Accounts stated in its report for the year 2021 that, in light of the main risks in a global context characterized by “high prices and demand and a decline in fossil fuel reserves, major challenges have been imposed in the field of reduced energy consumption and the emission of greenhouse gases.” The average annual energy consumption in Morocco is about 0.5 tons of oil per capita, and it increases by 4.3% every year.”
The correspondent added, explaining that this matter led Morocco, since 2009, to adopt “a national energy strategy under the wise leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God grant him victory, as energy efficiency has become a national priority.”
The Socialist Group also highlighted that in light of this approach, Law 16.09 was issued relating to the National Agency for the Development of Renewable Energies and Energy Efficiency, which among its objectives was to adopt “a new approach to intervention in order to keep pace with the new dynamism experienced by the renewable energies and energy efficiency sector and to create innovative intervention plans to develop the provision of services.” “Energy, which enables in particular the creation of clean and sufficient resources to meet national energy needs.”
