After interrupting the collaboration with former national coach Daina Kazakeviča, the LFF board of directors delegated the choice of the new national coach to Lashenko. The next coach of the national team is expected to be the highest paid specialist in the history of the national team.
In an interview on Latvian television, Lashenko stressed that Latvia is not the only place where coaches listen to job offers and candidates always hope for the best offer. Lashenko offers bidders part of the financial reward that the federation would receive from the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) for the success of the national team.
“Before the board meeting, I want to agree with a candidate that I will forward for approval [LFF] on the board,” Lashenko said. “I think it’s better to choose one [kandidātu].”
Among the candidates is the former coach of FK RFS, the Lithuanian Valds Dambrausks, who after coaching the Latvian team worked in several foreign clubs. Dambrauska’s advantage is his knowledge of Latvian football, however, he would probably like to continue working in club football.
The historic coach of the Italian youth national teams, the Italian Paolo Nicoloto, is also in the federation’s sights. The experienced coach only speaks Italian, so his English-speaking assistants would have a big responsibility. Furthermore, Nicolò has never worked outside Italy.
Mareks Papšuns, coach of Polish champion “Rakow” Częstochowa, previously represented by striker Vladislava Gutkowski, was also contacted. He was recognized as Poland’s best coach in 2022, but after winning the title, the 49-year-old Pole took a break from football for seven months. Furthermore, there is also interest in him from Azerbaijan, which can certainly offer more money.
We will find out the name of the new national coach on February 5th after the meeting of the LFF board of directors. The hired specialist will be able to go to the draw for group C of the UEFA Nations League three days later.
