The vallenatos received sad news last Saturday, upon learning of the unexpected death of the renowned artist Carlos Julio Márquez, known as ‘Kajuma’, to whom his colleagues, friends and family paid an emotional tribute, in which art was the protagonist .
His remains were laid to rest in the Ardiente Chamber at the Valledupar House of Culture, Cecilia Caballero de López, where some of his colleagues decided to stamp their talent on the coffin, which was painted with colored strokes, as a tribute to this great master of art. .
He is a native of Convencion, Norte de Santander, from where he came with his parents to Rincón Hondo, district of Chiriguaná and then resided in the capital of Cesar, where he stood out for his expressionist painting, where he exhibited figures alluding to folklore, women and to everyday life, he even dedicated a work to Pope Francis, despite declaring himself an atheist.
He worked for art at Cesar for more than 30 years, with studies in Fine Arts in several European countries. He won the first painting prize held at the Cesar in 1968 with the work ‘Don Quixote’.
In his paintings he reflected the techniques of pastel, oil and acrylic on canvas, highlighting expressionism, impressionism, figurative and abstract art with his own style.
‘Kajuma’, at 77 years old, suffered a massive heart attack in his home, located in the Dangond neighborhood of Valledupar.
