The EU warned Georgia – 2024-04-12 08:16:53

The announcement of the ruling party in Georgia that it will bring up the draft law “On the transparency of foreign influence” again raises serious concerns.

Publika.az reports that this is stated in the press service of the European Union (EU).

The EU called on Georgia to maintain its commitment to the promotion of democracy, the rule of law and human rights: “We regret that this issue has been brought up again in March 2023, despite public opinion and international reactions. Creating a favorable environment for non-governmental organizations and ensuring media freedom are essential for democracy. It is also very important for the EU accession process.”

The EU reminded that the Council of Europe granted Georgia candidate status due to taking the appropriate steps indicated in the Commission’s recommendation dated November 8, 2023:

“Transparency should not be used as a tool to limit the free activities of the civil society. We call on the political leaders in Georgia to accept and implement the reforms put forward with the aim of joining the European Union.”
