With a historical decision, the EU overcame months of deadlock marked by intense farmers’ protests and gave the green light by a narrow majority to a landmark nature protection law, which nevertheless divided Austria’s coalition government. Twenty of the 27 environment ministers voted in favor of the Nature Restoration Regulation, legislation which aims to introduce measures to restore at least 20% of the EU’s land and sea areas by 2030 and all ecosystems in need of restoration by 2050.
