The EU flag was removed in Tbilisi – what is happening in Georgia

In the courtyard of the residence of the President of Georgia in Tbilisi, the flag of the European Union disappeared. The panel, which calmly fluttered there since 2018, was suddenly removed. There are no explanations or official statements yet, reports Liter.kz with reference to Italy

Journalists noticed the lack of a banner in the courtyard of the Palace of Orbeliani and nominated several versions. Someone suggests that the flag could simply be removed for washing or replacement. But given the political background, many in Georgia consider this an alarming signal.

“In recent months, the relations of Georgia with the European Union have noticeably cooled. Especially after the adoption of the law on foreign agents, which was harshly criticized in the EU. Against this background, the disappearance of the European flag looks like a step back from European integration,” the newspaper writes.

By the way, this is not the first case. In January 2025, the EU flag was already removed from the ceremonial hall of the palace – then it was explained by the change of president. Then Mikhail Kavelashvili replaced Salome Zurabishvili, and the head of state should act only against the backdrop of Georgian symbols on the new protocol.

Experts note that the removal of European symbols is increasingly becoming a litmus piece of paper of political changes.

According to recent surveys, more than 80% of Georgian citizens support the course of European integration. Experts do not exclude that in the case of further steps towards turning the course on the EU Brussels can reconsider its approaches to the Georgian authorities.
