The prime minister of Estonia Kaya Kalas was placed on the Russian government’s most wanted list, which includes Estonian Deputy Foreign Minister Taimar Peterkop and Lithuanian Culture Minister Simonas Kairis. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Kalas was wanted for hostile actions against Russia and “desecration of historical memory”. “These are people who carry out hostile actions against our historical memory and our country,” he added.
A Russian security source told Russian state news agency TASS that the three politicians are being prosecuted for “destroying monuments to Soviet soldiers” in World War II. Kalas has been a staunch supporter of Ukraine since Russia invaded in February 2022 and is one of the strongest voices in the European Union and NATO in favor of providing more weapons to Ukraine. Yesterday, after Moscow’s announcement, the 46-year-old politician said that she is not afraid and will not be silent, but will continue to offer her support to Kiev.
Meanwhile, in the US, the revised foreign aid package to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan, totaling $95 billion, passed the Senate by a broad and bipartisan majority of 70 to 29. Despite the fact, however, that in this particular body of Congress several Republicans (22 out of 49) decided to align themselves with the majority of their colleagues from the Democratic Party, as a result of which they easily exceeded the prescribed minimum of 60 votes required for to approve the proposal, it is far from certain that the same will happen in the House of Representatives, as the attitude of the Republicans there is clearly tougher.
It seems, in fact, that despite the optimism of the leader of the majority in the Senate, the Democrat Chuck Summer, the speaker of the House, the Republican Mike Johnson, is not even sure that he will bring the aid package to a vote. It is something, after all, that it seems that even Donald Trump does not want, who, despite his unconditional support for Israel, does not hide his opposition to the continuation of the economic support of Kiev and the war. Late yesterday, Joe Biden called on Mike Johnson to “immediately” bring the aid package to a vote in the House, pointing out that Trump’s “dangerous” and “un-American” comments about NATO make it even more imperative that he approve the Congress new funding for Ukraine.
