The Dutch parties finally agreed to form a right-wing government – 2024-06-18 18:44:29

Political parties in the Netherlands have reached a final agreement on the formation of a future right-wing government, the leader of the Freedom Party, which won a majority in the last election, Geert Wilders, said today, quoted by Reuters.

After nearly half a year of negotiations, Wilders’ nationalist Freedom Party last month reached an agreement to form a coalition with three other conservative parties, but they disagreed on government posts.

“We have reached an agreement,” Wilders told reporters after nearly four weeks of negotiations on how to allocate positions among the four parties.

Last month, the coalition already announced that Dick Schoff, who is not affiliated with any party, will be the prime minister of the new government.

Schoff, 67, was until last month a senior official in the Dutch justice ministry after years leading the national intelligence and counter-terrorism agency. At the turn of the century he was also the head of the Dutch Migration Service.

He will head a cabinet that all four parties have said will have weaker ties to parliament. Details of who will occupy the remaining posts in the new government have not yet been announced.
